Having a missing tooth can drastically alter your health and lifestyle. It can affect what foods you are able to eat and even alter your speech patterns. Fortunately, you do not have to live with a gap in your mouth because our dentist in Dallas, TX offers dental implants. There are a few things you should know about this procedure before going into it.

Before

Our dentist will examine your mouth to make sure you are a good candidate for getting a dental implant. This involves checking the strength of your jaw bone to make sure it can support an implant. Your overall oral health will also need to be observed to ensure you have no symptoms of gum disease. Whether or not you will be able to eat before the treatment will depend on whether you are getting IV sedation.

During

There are two phases of the dental implant procedure. During the first phase, your implant is inserted into the jaw bone. The gums get closed over the implant, giving it an opportunity to heal. Over the course of a few months, your implant fuses with your jaw bone, which is known as osseointegration. For the second phase, you will return to the dentist’s office to get an abutment and crown placed over your implant.

After

Immediately after the second phase of the procedure, it is vitally important you keep your mouth clean. You do not want to exercise vigorously during the first couple of days. You should also gently brush your teeth the night after the treatment. If you experience swelling after the surgery, you can use an ice pack to keep it down. Any pain can be managed with medication. Our dentist will provide you with any other instructions, so you know what needs to be done.
