Understanding the Stages of Gum Disease
There are three identifiable stages of gum disease: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis.
Gingivitis causes inflammation of the gum tissue because plaque and bacteria build up around the gum line. Fortunately, this stage can be reversed.
Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis is left untreated and pockets start to form around the teeth. At this stage, disease has caused irreversible damage to the bone and gums.
If the gums are left untreated at this stage, it will progress to the advanced periodontitis, where connective tissue is destroyed and the teeth become loose or fall out completely. This is why early treatment is critical to your oral health!
