Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids

Early detection is necessary when treating young teeth and gums. Cavities are more likely to develop because of novice oral hygiene habits and unhealthy snacking. This is why we recommend all children see us every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning. These biannual visits allow us to check for problem areas and monitor the development of growing smiles. We’ll also instruct your child on ways to improve their brushing and flossing techniques at home.
Dental Sealants

Teeth located in the back of the mouth are often the hardest to reach for children. As a result, Dr. J will recommend dental sealants, which are protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars. Because of their many grooves and crevices, bacteria and food particles can become trapped and cause cavities to form. However, with sealants, this protective barrier will prevent any harmful particles from penetrating and causing decay.
Fluoride Treatments

Children need an adequate (and safe) amount of fluoride exposure. While some may receive enough from tap water, brushing, and eating fruits and vegetables, it’s often helpful to apply a coating of fluoride to their teeth during a regular appointment as well. This process takes only minutes and is completely painless. Once the application is complete, you can expect their teeth to remain better protected from decay in between appointments.
Tooth-Colored Fillings

Once a cavity forms, Dr. J will recommend a tooth-colored filling to seal off the structure from future reinfection or damage. Made of composite resin that is color-matched to your child’s natural tooth enamel, it blends in seamlessly with their existing teeth, resulting in dental work that is unnoticeable to others. The malleable resin easily fills the tooth and enables your child to keep more of their natural tooth structure, as opposed to traditional amalgam.
